Saudi Arabia is channeling $2.7 billion (SR10.1bn) towards enhancing its sports infrastructure, including the building of eco-friendly stadiums, in its pursuit to co-host the FIFA World Cup 2030 with Egypt and Greece. This initiative encompasses the erection of a brand-new stadium in Riyadh and the enlargement of several existing ones, with the construction phase kicking off between October of the current year and February 2024. Riyadh is placing a strong emphasis on sustainability for these stadium ventures, integrating elements like energy conservation, efficient water utilization, eco-friendly materials, and enhanced public transport systems. Taking a leaf out of Qatar’s FIFA World Cup Stadium 974’s book, which pioneered in setting sustainable standards for stadium construction and operation, Riyadh aspires to boost its international reputation and establish a new gold standard for subsequent sports infrastructure endeavors.
