Saudi Arabia Tackles Environmental Impact of Desalination

Confronted with water shortages, Saudi Arabia is turning to solar energy to make the process of water desalination greener. The Jazlah facility in Jubail city merges solar power with desalination, targeting a reduction of approximately 60,000 tons of carbon emissions each year. While the nation’s escalating desalination demands align with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s vision of establishing a global center for business and tourism, it presents hurdles to its environmental aspirations, including the goal of net-zero emissions by 2060. The Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) has set an objective to decrease 37 million metric tonnes of carbon emissions by 2025, shifting to electrically-driven reverse osmosis and broadening the use of solar energy.
